The Aniplex x Kadokawa Anime Matsuri livestream event on Friday announced that a new anime adaptation of the “University Student Arc” from the Seishun Buta Yarō (Rascal Does Not Dream) light novel series will premiere in 2025, titled Seishun Buta Yarō Santa Claus no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of Santa Claus). No additional details about the series were provided during the announcement.
Kadokawa first published Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (Seishun Buta Yarō wa Bunny Girl-senpai no Yume wo Minai) by Hajime Kamoshida in April 2014. The series is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and has over 3 million copies in circulation. The 14th novel, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Girlfriend no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Girlfriend), will be released on August 9, and the 15th and final volume, Seishun Buta Yarō wa Dear Friend no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend), will come out on October 10. Both volumes will include limited editions with a drama CD.
Yen Press is publishing the English translation of the novel series.
The television anime adaptation of Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai premiered in Japan in October 2018, airing 13 episodes that covered the story up to the fifth novel. Aniplex of America streamed the series on Crunchyroll, Funimation, and other platforms.
The anime film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl (Seishun Buta Yarō wa Yume-Miru Shōjo no Yume wo Minai), which adapts the sixth and seventh volumes, was released in Japan in June 2019. Aniplex of America and Funimation Films distributed the film in the U.S.
A sequel project adapted the eighth and ninth novels: Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid.
The film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out opened in Japan in June 2023, selling 118,108 tickets and earning approximately 175,648,924 yen (about US$1.28 million) in its first three days, ranking #4 at the box office.
Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid premiered in Japan on December 1, debuting in 103 theaters and ranking #4 in its opening weekend. It sold 119,000 tickets, grossing about 163 million yen (around US$1.12 million) in its first three days.
Aniplex of America screened these films with English subtitles in U.S. theaters on March 24 and with English dubs on March 25.
